Jacques Cartier Bridge
Hairline cracks in the high performance barrier walls
Problem
The Jacques Cartier Bridge had developed hairline cracks in the high performance barrier walls which would ultimately lead to corrosion of the reinforcing steel and require replacement of the bridge structure.
The challenges facing us were:
- Busy highway location.
- The sidewalk, walls and bridge deck were all constructed as one piece.
- Cracks would lead to corrosion from chloride ion and freeze/thaw cycles.
Solution
CN2000® products are anti-corrosive and will not deteriorate over time. As a result, they will continue to protect the underlying infrastructure from erosion.
The CN2000® protection will lead to lower maintenance costs and higher useful lives of the infrastructure.
Process & Highlights
- The surface was prepared for the CN2000® coating.
- Two coats of CN2000B® were applied to the wall to prevent any further deterioration and provide a self-healing solution for future cracks.
- After the second coat of CN2000B® set, two coats of the polymer flexible membrane CN2000C® and CN2000D® were applied on top of the CN2000B® coating to provide a labour-free curing process (no mist spraying required), which gives the coating more flexibility to provide protection from vibrations on the bridge deck.
